Skin unfortunately gets damaged not just by environmental factors such as the sun and by smoking but also as a result of damage to the skin by conditions such as acne.
These can leave you with disfiguring facial and body scarring which can affect you psychologically as well as physically.
Treatments such as lasers promise the improvement in acne scars and skin rejuvenation.
They are often very expensive, have potential down time of days to weeks and can cause serious side effects such as burns and further scarring!
Many lasers are also not suitable for darker coloured Asian and Black skin types.
Frequently asked questions about Dermaroller
What is a Dermaroller™?
Dermaroller™ is a safe, tried and tested method to break down scar tissue and naturally create new collagen which rebuilds the skin giving a more even, smooth and brighter complexion.
It consists of a hand held roller with hundreds of tiny micro needles.
Different dermarollers with different needle depths are used for various type of scars or skin rejuvenation.
There are several different brands of Dermaroller™ available on the market. In line with all guidelines and best use policy Dr Dan Dhunna only uses “Genuine Dermaroller™” as it is the only version that has a FDA approval in the United States.
How does it work?
Genuine Dermaroller™ Therapy™ involves rolling the micro-needles over the face or damaged skin. The face is numbed with a topical anaesthetic which needs to be on the face for at least 45 minutes.
The needles penetrate to the desired depth according to the area of treatment creating hundreds of micro-channels in the skin.
This stimulates the body to repair these micro-channels by naturally producing collagen and hence rebuilding the pre-existing damaged skin or scar tissue. Helping to lift and soften acne scars, improve sun damaged skin and rejuvenate the face.
Where can it be used?
- Skin Rejuvenation i.e. lipstick/smokers lines
- Stretch Marks
What are the results?
Results have been shown to be extraordinary with on average a 400% increase of deposition of collagen leading to significant and visual improvements in the vast majority of people of all ages, and skin types including Asian and Black skins.
Several treatments are needed depending upon the individual concern to create the best result.
How long does the procedure take?
After an initial consultation, the skin is generally prepared for a few weeks ahead of the scheduled procedure with the use of specific anti-oxidant creams and high SPF sunscreen to prep the skin and support the skins regeneration.
On the day most treatments do not take more than 20-30minutes in total.
Topical Anaesthetic cream is strongly recommended to be used for about 45 mins to an hour before treatment to improve comfort during the procedure.
What are the side effects?
Side effects are minimal. Generally, most people will look like they have a mild sunburn. The worst of this usually lasts a few hours but the skin may remain reddish or mildly pink for a few days post. This is usually easily covered with make-up if required.
There is usually no need to take time off from work, most people are able to return to work the next day.
The use of High Factor Sunscreen SPF 30+ is strongly recommended post procedure for a couple of weeks.
When do I see results?
Immediately after the Genuine Dermaroller™ treatment, the body begins to regenerate. New skin cells and blood supply are formed, and new strands of collagen begin to be generated and then laid down to repair the damaged tissue.
The first improvements in texture may be seen after about 6-8 weeks and these continue to develop over several months after each treatment.
With each new Geunine Dermaroller™ treatment, a new collagen cycle is created. Each of these adds up to rejuvenate the skin, lifting scars, smooth stretch marks and improving the appearance
How many procedures will I need?
On average most people require at least 3-4 Genuine Dermaroller™ sessions. These are approximately 6-8 weeks apart.
Significant Acne Scarring usually needs another 1-2 treatments.
